Less Caffeine, More Internet Through WildBlue

You need to visit a website loaded with pictures, animations and music. You click on the link. You go and put on the coffee. You wait. When it’s done, you pour yourself some and carry it to your desk. You take a sip. It needs more sugar. You go back and stir it in. Take another sip. Yes, it’s good. Pour some more. Carry it back again. Hmmm, the page is only half loaded yet. Ok, time to go back and make a sandwich.

Does the above describe your experience with the Internet? If yes, read on. See if the following checklist of symptoms applies to your situation.

1. You have built a mental list of websites you can’t visit – they’d take ages to load.

2. You compose your e-mails beforehand in a word processor, and then connect via dial-up and copy-paste the whole thing into your web-based email service’s ‘compose’ page. There’s no sense in trying to write/edit your text online, on a slow, timed connection.

3. You’ve heard fairy tales about all the goodies the Internet has to offer you. You never go near them. They weren’t really meant for you.

4. You have developed this habit of avoiding links to music, videos, pictures etc., because your connection just isn’t good enough for them.

5. You ask your friends not to send you pictures or large attachments via e-mail because they take hours to get downloaded, and often your connection breaks halfway through and you have to reconnect and start all over again.

Does the above more or less accurately describe your relationship with the internet?

Then it’s time for you to forget obsolete dial-up technology and move to something that’ll really let you ’surf’ the web at blazing speeds, instead of dragging yourself through it. Yes, you know about DSL and cable, but these never seem to arrive in your area. Of course, the connection needs to be affordable too. You have heard great things of satellite Internet, but aren’t those things too expensive?

Not now. Not any more.

Now, there’s WildBlue.

You have always wanted to get broadband Internet, but cable or DSL just don’t seem to arrive in your area. Which leaves you stuck with clicking on the dial-up icon on your desktop, and making coffee and sandwiches while you have an interesting site loading up.

Now, if only there were something that’d let you connect at 20 times the speed of dialup. If only there were no click-click-clicking on the boring old dial-up icon. If only there were no disconnects, no more need to avoid video links, no copy-pasting, no more making that coffee which you didn’t really need, but only the pure internet, unrestricted, rich, lightning fast, waiting for you to jump in and enjoy the show. No matter where you are in the US, no matter if there’s a DSL or cable provider in your area. What you really need is satellite Internet, but you have heard it’s too costly.

Good news for you – satellite Internet is just what you need, and satellite Internet is what you’ll get from WildBlue. At very affordable prices, and speeds comparable to cable or DSL but with the additional benefits of a wireless connection, this is the perfect Internet solution for your home or your business. It’s an always-on connection, which means you don’t need to connect every time you want to do something on the net. Satellite technology does away with the barrier between you and the Internet, and connects the two seamlessly together.

All you need is a small satellite receiver dish to be set up in your home, and a satellite modem, both of which shall be provided by WildBlue. It’s amazing how fast the certified technicians can set up the equipment. The dish can be set up on the roof, in the ground or on an outside wall. All you need is a Windows or Macintosh computer that the technicians will soon prepare for the connection, while you sit back and watch. You can expect to start your new Internet experience the very same day as the equipment arrives.

What’s more, all your existing software will continue to work with WildBlue satellite Internet. WildBlue gives you free space on the web for uploading your own material, and multiple e-mail addresses. It supports a broad variety of browsers, e-mail clients and other internet-related programs. You can even continue to use your existing service provider’s e-mail addresses – you’ll need to talk to them for terms and conditions.

So what are you waiting for? With the help of WildBlue, cut down on your coffee making and start enjoying the Internet like it was meant to be!

Traits of a Good Interview

Anyone would know a great interview when they see it. A good interview demystifies godlike people, from royalty to rockers, and lowers them to a level at par with mere mortals, humanizing them. It shocks the people, but mostly it satisfies them because they are reassured, once again, that everyone has the same sporting chance under the sky. Between them and the public figures on high are the interviewers who have the occasionally thankless venture to move heaven closer to earth. And so, America was as much in awe of Barbara Walters as Monica Lewinsky when the two sat down to talk about the Clinton scandal. Americans watched with baited breath too as President Richard Nixon got skewered by David Frost for an apology, short of a full-scale confession to Watergate. Richard Meryman of Life had the honor of talking with Marilyn Monroe for her last interview. If anything, nothing could ever be as indelible in one’s memories as Princess Diana gabbing with Martin Bashir and bemoaning her convoluted life with Prince Charles. All these are the stuff of memorable conversations, and there is a fine thread coursing through them — the stars replied to exceptional questions and laid bare their souls.

Interview Nation features a video and article about how Ken Mehlman and the Environmental Defense Fund are working to improve environmental standards in business operations.

Ken Mehlman talks about how KKR and the Environmental Defense Fund have saved companies $16 million through environmental initiatives.

Ken Mehlman is the Head of Global Public Affairs for Kravis Kohlberg and Roberts.

Networking Strategically: How to Get the Ultimate Referral

Don’t be shy about it. You’re networking for a reason: You want more business.

By networking strategically you can get more business than you know what do with.

In order to network strategically you’re going to need leverage. Before you can get leverage you’ve got to understand what you’re trying to move, or in this case accomplish.

You must first very clearly understand who your target market is. Be specific as possible. Everyone or anyone is NOT a good answer. A service company within a 10 mile radius, with 5-10 employees, that’s been in business for at least 3 years, uses xyz or abc Customer Relationship Management software and works with other small service businesses is a very good answer.

The ultimate referral is an introduction to someone who isn’t interested in doing business with you. Instead they want to help their clients by referring you to them. Instead of getting a referral to one new customer they’re going to refer you to one new customer several times a month for years to come. Which would you rather have? 1 new customer that does $1,000 worth of business with you, or 3 new customers every month that each do $1,000 worth of business with you. That’s what you’re looking for. Finding them and building relationships with them is your networking strategy.

Once you understand who your ideal customers are, think about who else works with that specific market. Do you know them already? Do you know someone else that already has a relationship with them? Where are they likely to be that you can have an opportunity to meet them? The easiest way might be to ask your existing clients to introduce you to their other vendors. This is a great way to demonstrate that you’re competent and have satisfied clients who are willing to refer you.

This is not a process that’s going to work overnight. First you’re going to need to find these other vendors. Then you’re going to need to build a very strong relationship with them, and earn their trust. Only then are you likely to get a stream of referrals from them.

The ultimate referral is a two way street. It’s also the best way to build an incredibly strong relationship with someone. If rather than referring that one new client, you refer them to a complimentary service provider who can refer them to 2 new customers every week, you won’t soon be forgotten.

Look for ways to leverage the time you spend networking. Search for opportunities to give others the ultimate referral. Network strategically and before you know it you’ll be experiencing your most profitable year ever!

The Eternal Allure of Gambling

I just spent three days in the land of milk and money – Las Vegas. There is something refreshingly honest about the place: it’s all about money and it knows it. It doesn’t pretend to be anything else.

No doubt some of the architects think that their work has some importance of its own: the re-creations of Venice, Camelot, Paris, Egypt, and New York. Battling pirate ships and erupting volcanoes aside, once you enter the themed palaces, they are all the same: crap tables, blackjack tables, roulette wheels, and thousands upon thousands of slot machines – all promising to give you a fun time while you lose your money in the pursuit of a possible fortune.

The lure of gambling has existed throughout recorded history but has never gripped the millions who now participate. We play state-sponsored lotteries, visit tribal and other legal casinos, create special accounts for Internet gaming, bet the horses, bet the dogs, bet on sports, fights, anything where we can catch the excitement of beating the odds.

Moralists worry that a large percentage of those who risk their money, are those who cannot afford to risk anything: the poor, the unemployed, the minimum wage fringe who, at the best of times, barely hang on to the basement rung of the economic ladder. They argue that gambling should be a pleasant pursuit for those who can afford to lose a reasonable amount, using the money they have earned for purchasing excitement, entertainment, and momentary escape.

Who’s kidding who?

For the middle class gamblers who bet on the super bowl, the derby, the occasional lottery ticket, or visit the casinos once or twice a year, gambling is a diversion, a fun time, a little bit of excitement sandwiched between the realities of career advancement, building a nest egg, raising children, and doing their civic duties. The thrill of a potential win is the lure of proving their ability to compete, to come out on top, to better their opponents, the pros, the odds, the morning line. It is a personal challenge that can boost their self-confidence when they win but has few negative effects when they lose because their real self-image relates to the important aspects of their lives, separate from their gaming ventures.

It is those who cannot afford to lose who become addicted to the lure of chance. Stuck in minimum wage employment, without the education, the skills, or the entrepreneurial savvy to work their way up the social and economic pyramid, they see gambling as the promise of a permanent way out, a tsunami that can sweep them instantaneously to the top, an overnight millionaire. A lottery ticket, a slot machine, a pick 6 wager, plays no favorites. The poor, the homeless, the forgotten, the have-nots, all compete with the rich and famous on an equal footing. They become hooked on continued gaming because it is the only chance of reaching the lifestyle they want to achieve.

A successful businessman wins a quarter of a million dollars and it is nice: a bonus, a chance to splurge on new toys, the opportunity to retire outstanding debts, or expand their company with a welcome infusion of capital.

A working-class-stiff wins a quarter of a million dollars and it is truly life-changing. A janitor, a gardener, a fast food worker, a guard – with a windfall like that, they can turn their back on the roach-infested slum apartment and move to a better neighborhood or buy a small house and a new car. They can quit their hated job, help their families, participate in the good life they have only previously experienced as outsiders, looking in.

The problem is that it is non-sustainable. Winning what seems like an enormous amount of money seldom leads to rational investment: education, skill upgrades, saving for future college costs or business opportunities. Moving from nothing to something, in an instant, is not an event likely to produce rational planning. For those whose monetary and emotional needs have never been truly met, immediate gratification is the direction of choice. A lifetime of denial demands a certain degree of self-indulgence when the means for it become miraculously available.

Is it any wonder that a large percentage of lottery winners file bankruptcy within five years of their win? The moves, the changes, the life enhancements that substantial wins provide are ephemeral.

In the short run, they provide an exciting exit from a black tunnel. In the long run, such a win turns negative – because the dream has become a reality, even if only for a brief moment, returning to prior levels of existence becomes an even more painful form of imprisonment.

The need to recapture that dream, and perhaps maintain it this time if a mega-million prize can be snatched, keeps the gambling industry thriving and the promises of dream fulfillment entice us all, most especially the poor, into one more venture, one more ticket, one more chance.

Forcing Bulbs for Indoor Bloom: Even ‘Brownthumbers’ Can Do It

Forcing Bulbs for Indoor Bloom

‘Force’ is such a strong word for making a plant bloom out of season. ‘Coaxing’ is better, maybe even ‘teasing’, of course, ‘fooling’ won’t do because we all know that Mother Nature will not be made light of. But as long as we understand her rhythms we can speed up the seasons a bit, like nudging spring into our homes during the bleakest of winters. This is especially true, and easy, with bulbs, those remarkable self-contained flower factories.

Choosing Your Bulbs

Most of our common hardy outdoor bulbs are candidates for forcing: Tulips, Crocus, Daffodils, Amaryllis, Paperwhite Narcissus, Muscari, Miniature Iris and Hyacinths. Select only top quality bulbs that are large and heavy for their size and are not soft or moldy. If you’re not going to pot right away store them in a mesh onion-like or a ventilated paper bag in your basement or the refrigerator crisper, any place where the temperature stays below 65 degrees and the humidity is fairly high. And this is important: Never refrigerate bulbs with fruit. The ethylene gas produced by ripening fruits destroys the bulb’s flowering potential. (By the way, never store them in the freezer.)

It’s a Timing Thing

First check your calendar. Most bulbs require 10 to 14 weeks in temperatures below 48 degrees. This is their rooting period and it is absolutely essential if you expect flowers. The actual forcing, 2 to 4 weeks at around 60 degrees, follows the cooling stage.

Potting ‘Em Up

Use clean pots with drainage holes. The depth varies according to the size bulb you’re forcing. You’ll need 2 inches of soil below the bulb in a container large enough for the bulb to be even with the rim when planted. Use a good soilless potting mixture and don’t worry about fertilizer, all the bulb requires is contained inside.

Place 2 inches of the mix in the pot, then set your bulbs. Mass them in, even touching each other is fine. Bulbs are very friendly and love a party. But don’t combine different kinds of bulbs because they have various cooling requirements.

Finish filling the pot, firming the soil around the bulbs, then water well to settle the soil. And don’t forget to include a label with the kind of bulb, the planting date and the day you want to take it out of storage.

Remember that bulbs will flower about 2 to 4 weeks after being brought into warmer temps. So from the actual planting to flowering, ballpark it at 15 weeks.

Place the containers in a refrigerator, a cool spot in the basement, a root cellar (like there are many of those left), a crawl space, cold frame, or better yet, outside if it stays below 45 degrees and does not freeze. Freezing doesn’t harm bulbs in the ground, of course, but it will slow down your forcing schedule.

The Forcing

When you take the bulbs out of storage into warmth and light, the growth of leaves and flowers is triggered. First transfer the pots to a place with indirect sunlight and 60 degree temps for a week or two.

When the shoots are 4-6 inches tall, move the pots to a bright, sunny window to stimulate the flowering process. 68 degrees or so and lots of sunshine produce the best flowers. When the buds show color move the pots to indirect light so the flowers last longer. If the flowers are coming on too fast, slow things down by moving the pot out of the light and into a cooler area.

During the forcing, keep the soil moist.

Once a bulb is forced throw it away. It may rebloom but it’ll take a couple of years.

And that’s it. Pretty easy, huh? All it takes is patience.

The Schedule

This timetable may help you plan but these are only guidelines. Bulbs, like most plants, can’t read. In all cases the bulbs must be well rooted before forcing.

To flower in January, plant in September or early October.

Planting in mid-October will produce flowers in February and
a late October or early November planting means flowers in late winter.

The Easiest Bulbs to Force

Paperwhite Narcissus is very popular, easy and grows in sand or gravel. They are also available pre-cooled.

Amaryllis are Christmas plants and require no cooling, but plant in early November for holiday flowers.

Crocus will flower after a 12-14 week rooting period and grow in gravel and water.

Hyacinth require only 12 weeks and are easily forced in special ‘hyacinth’ vases with only water.

Muscari need about 16 weeks and should be jammed together in the pot for the best show.

Iris reticulata are easy, needing about 15 weeks and excellent drainage.

Tulips must have at least 15 weeks. When planting tulips put the flat side facing the pot rim. That way the large outer leaves will drape over the edge and not detract from the flowers.

Daffodils require 12-14 weeks and lots of strong, bright light during forcing. Try the miniature varieties for the best results.

Free Rental on the Motorola W218

The W218 is not the greatest mobile phone Motorola have ever produced, but it is still worth looking at. Considering it is an entry level handset the W218 is really basic contrasted with some other phones. As you would expect from Motorola the functional design of this mobile handset is very good.

Size-wise the Motorola W218 is small and easy to carry. This handset weighs just 78 g. Moving on to the display the handset is fitted with a 1.6 inch screen, which is quite a small display if you look at the other options available for the price. A TFT, 65K colors display is fitted to this mobile handset. The Motorola W218 is equipped with Polyphonic ring tones along with a vibration alert. The W218 has support for 2G GSM 900 / 1800 . The W218 has an integrated VGA, 640×480 pixels camera. On to battery cell life the Motorola W218 has 300 hours reserve time and 7:00 talk time. The battery that comes with the W218 is a Li-Ion 850 mAh. This mobile phone also has a few extra features, for example:

  • Calculator
  • Built-in handsfree
  • Regrettably for Motorola the W218 faces really stiff competition meaning it is quite easy to get a real bargain on this phone. The most cost effective place to shop for a mobile phone in today’s hi tech world is not on the high street, but from the Internet. Buying online can save you a significant amount of money, amazingly it is possible to get 9 months free line rental , which may never cost a dime.
