The winners of the 23rd edition of the Thane District Badminton Championship are bringing home more cash prizes and trophies since they won multiple events. This long-running tournament was sponsored by the Navi Mumbai Sports Association.
According to the results, the men’s singles and doubles titles were won by Akshay Dewalkar of Air India. The junior girls’ singles, doubles and women’s singles events were won by Air India’s Saili Rane and the junior boys’ singles and doubles were dominated by Eshan Naqvi. The midget girls’ singles and doubles were won by Gayatri Mehta of Thane.
Dewalkar was unseeded in the men’s singles event thus his victory was impressive even from his opponents’ perspectives. In the final he defeated 2nd seed Manish Rawat of Central Railway in straight sets. He received 18,000 rupees for his victories in both the singles and doubles. He paired up with Jishnu to defeat the talented duo of Eshan Naqvi and Mayur Ghatnekar 21-14, 21-12.
Gayatri Mehta was simply the toast of the tournament by defeating Nidhi Shinde 21-11, 23-21 and afterwards teamed up with Nidhi to outlast Shreya Bahadkar and Neha Dixit in straight sets.
Saili Rane also had an easier time rallying towards the two titles, deftly handling her yonex badminton racquet to win the two finals matches in straight sets.
The organizers reported that more than 600 players participated this year. The prizes were personally given away by Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik and Dilip Rane, the Vice President of Navi Mumbai Sports Association.
