As I Have Often Stated

As I have often stated, I am a big fan of the sit and go format of poker tournaments. For those of you who don’t know, they are single table tournaments, usually with ten people at a table, and generally the three remaining players win money, with the player who finishes in first winning the most.

I think sit and go’s are a unique type of game that allows a player to hone their tournament skills, and particularly their late-game tournament skills. If you are playing in a large online poker tournament, say one with 300 players, the way you play at the beginning and the way you play with a few players left, if you’re lucky enough to make it that far, is quite different.

In a sit and go, as with a regular tournament, if I make it down to the final three people, or final two, I like to open it up and play aggressive. A lot of players will tend to get cautious then, and you can end up winning a lot of chips which is good when you go in for the kill. Also, playing more aggressively when it comes down to the final two in a poker online tournament will allow you to dictate the pace of play; often your opponent will fold his small blind if it’s not that great for fear you will raise again. That will allow you to pick up some blinds even when you’re not holding that great of cards.

Should I Gamble?

We’ve all gathered by now than online poker is a game of skill, where if you play by certain standards and with the odds, in the long run, theoretically, you will profit. There are of course within this the minor loops and bad runs that come with any kind of variation, but patterns emerge, and in the end all is laid equal.

There come times, though, in the midst of any online poker player’s repetitions, where the urge to step outside the “correct” manner of play, or even the more aggressive version of whatever game you’ve got running may be, and knowing, against the grain, make a decision to gamble against the odds.

Though you’d never want to make this a habit, unless you are playing like a lottery, which is a bad idea, there can be moments and situations where the gamble is worth the go. Getting in on a big draw, or calling when you have reason to believe that your poker online opponent is way weaker than he acts, but you are not sure, that little extra doubt can the odds you need to make a marginal call.

Other times too, when you are way up for a night, for instance, you might have enough of a leeway that you can stand to take a small hit, if it means in the end that you will make more. These are exceptions, not the rule.

Going with Your Gut

In poker, as in life, we all have to make tough decisions sometimes. The information available is either skimpy or conflicting, making it hard to apply logical reasoning to the unknown. In these situations, people often just have to go with their “gut feeling” – the instinctual pull in a certain direction.

If you have gained experience at the poker table and are observant of the other players, then you can focus on your opponents’ actions to gain better insight the range of cards they play. You can study how the board texture is shaping up to gain a better understanding of what you are up against. Sometimes though you just can’t get a read on your opponent. Perhaps they just sat down at your cash table or you were just moved to another tournament table. You go heads-up over a big pot and have a tough decision to face. This is when instincts come into play.

Instincts arise from the sub-conscious, which stores memories of past experiences. It is your sub-conscious that sends out warning signals or draws you to pleasurable experiences. After you have gained experience at poker, your sub-conscious will also register tough decision situations from the past, when you were check-raised or bluffed off a hand. Gut feelings often conjure up a sense of déj vu – as though you have already lived through this experience.

When you are put on the spot in poker and have to make a tough decision, then ask for the time clock and connect with your own instincts. If your gut is telling you to fold or raise, then consider the circumstances that led to this point – your opponent’s betting, your position, the board texture and stack sizes — to find the underlying explanation for your gut feeling.

Your gut feeling might not always be right, but it is worth examining this instinctual sense to see if there is supporting evidence to warrant what your gut is telling you at the casino.

Thoughts on Pocket 2’s

Everybody likes a nice small pair. They have little to no commitmentyou either flop the set or you do not. When you do, you stand to make a nice chunk of money, assuming you don’t get caught up with, and when you don’t it’s easy to throw them into the muck and wait for the next online poker hand.

Pocket twos are particularly interesting among these confines. They are regarded as one of the most unassuming pairs, as when you do hit your set with that third two on the flop, no one is likely ever going to imagine that it is the online poker card that helped you. Sticking around with pocket twos and making that set could possibly be argued as a better investment even than the higher small pairs for that reason, even though the odds are the same.

One caveat for the pockets 2’s is that sometimes in the worst of situations you might be caught in a situation of set against set. Though it isn’t likely that you and your opponent both had a pocket pair that tripped up on the flop, in the case that it does happen, you are going to be dead to a 1 outer. Certainly this isn’t a fact to hide behind, but in certain very deep or high stakes games it might actually matter when making a decision to call a preflop raise. Keep this in mind at the casino online.

Are You Overly Susceptible to Poker Stress?

Poker is stressful for everyone, but for a few people the stress is simply too much. Certain people are simply too susceptible to stress to play poker without serious ramifications. The easiest way to tell if you will be overly susceptible to the stress of a poker game is to decide if you have any existing emotional problems. For example, if you are upset and tired, you will more susceptible to stress than someone in a normal emotional state. An underlying emotional cause could make someone far more susceptible to poker stress.

Some of the issues that could cause you to be overly susceptible to stress are less emotional and more pragmatic. For example, people with financial problems are more likely to be stressed out than those that are financially solid. Poker casinogames have the tendency to have a lot of money on the table, which can be stressful for people in financial straits.

The most important thing to do is to identify whether you have any of the preexisting conditions that could make your poker game more stressful than it needs to be. The point of the game is to have fun, so don’t let the pressure get in the way. Stress is a big deal, so stop it before it starts.

$20 Buys a Lot of Game These Days

Watching the evolution of sports games has been like watching a retarded child grow up to become a handsome and brilliant Master of the Universe. Now I’m not saying ESPN’s NBA 2K5 is the pinnacle of sports gaming, but I will tell you why it comes pretty damn close – especially for all of us basketball fanatics. Before I go on, let us talk a little bit about the “Corky” Thatcher friendly games of the past.

In 1958, Bill Higinbotham and Bob Dvorak developed Tennis-For-Two, the world’s first virtual sports game. The game itself worked on an oscilloscope and basically demonstrated the magic of Pong in green wave form. Electronic signals bouncing back and forth in an electronic . Over the next two years, Bill and Bob demonstrated Tennis-For-Two to astounded audiences across New York, but it would take another quarter century before the next electronic sports game would work its way into the public eye.

It was 1978 – our parents were high on coke, Carter was jerking off the Chinese and Atari released its arcade sports classic, Football. And if a title is any indication of the creativity behind this electronic ball of shit, it fit like a glove. Sitting on a whopping M6502 cpu with less than 1 Mhz of processing power, the only glimmer of hope for this inept beast was the unique roller-ball controls.

By the late 80’s, the NES vs. Sega gaming war was in high gear leaving Atari’s Football and most other first generation arcade titles collecting dust in dive bars across America. The fierceness of said battle brought us some of the most memorable sports games to date. With the likes of Tecmo Bowl, Punch Out, and All-Star Baseball, things were indeed looking up for the aspiring couch potato youth of the world.

The 90’s brought a new era of 64 bit systems and remarkable graphics in the sports game arena. Even the game play for football, hockey and baseball titles were impressing the masses, but developers still hadn’t given much attention to basketball titles. Just another example of whitey trying to keep the black man down.

In comes Sega’s ESPN NBA 2K5.

As fans of the real life game, we know the way players are supposed to move and interact with one another on the wood. We know that players don’t stop to catch a pass (so eat shit, EA) or change dribble direction in a split second. This is why Sega’s geeky team of developers can self high-five their asses straight to the bank.

This year’s release offers numerous adjustments and new features made to create the series’ most realistic basketball simulation to date, powered by a physics engine that can truly handle the quick paced, high scoring, stop-and-go game play with lubricated ease.

Sega also introduces a “Next Movement” system designed to display skills and talents from specific NBA players. A player’s particular physical makeup now helps determine how well he performs in everything from running up court on a fast break, rolling a pick, or cutting off an open lane on defense.

The key feature that ties all this goodness together is the “IsoMotion” control. Using one of the thumb sticks to control your player, you can glide him across the floor and execute hop-step jukes as smooth as Iverson on his best day. Playing online, however, I’ve learned that this method of controlling can be exploited to create impenetrable defense when you throw in network lag and a stick happy adversary. Once the glitches are worked out, I imagine the 24/7 mode of online play to be the biggest hit of this fall and winter season.

Speaking of which, the 24/7 mode is a definite step in the right direction for bringing gamers online. 24/7 allows you to create a player and run him through training levels to collect points which unlock new courts and increase your skill level. It’s like an RPG, but fun!

I’ll close with this: The fucking game costs $20 bucks. Go buy it.
