How Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co. Works in Coordination with the Environmental Defense Fund

When Henry Kravis and his partner George Roberts launched Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co (KKR) in 1976 with assistance from the First Chicago Corporation, the company’s specialization was in “bootstrap” buyouts. Pushing beyond, in the pursuit of making the businesses they take over more ecologically aware and more profitable in the same stride, they have established a unique green project that has fundamentally changed the method by which businesses and environmental agencies operate.

KKR’s Henry Kravis and the independent Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) joined forces a year ago, with the intention of making green business operation a widespread principle. Issues like resource depletion and high consumption of water resources rank high on their agenda. In order to accomplish this, they apply eco-efficiency which involves concepts like waste reduction, reducing the dispersion of toxic chemicals, and reducing the waste of resources. Although the project was a tremendous success, managment simply didn’t recognize how important the results were until Ken Mehlman, the person in charge of the Green Portfolio Project, carried out the first annual review. Much to everybody’s surprise, Ken saw that eco-efficiency not only raised environmental awareness, but was also increasing the profits from each business organization too. Just about all of the commercial concerns affiliated to KKR and Ken Mehlman now are involved in eco-efficiency. Considering that the group has a value of virtually $100,000,000,000 dollars, you can be certain this was not a simple achievement.

KKR with the EDF with the assistance of Ken Mehlman are developing the original Green Portfolio project. The Climate Corps Program set up by the Environmental Defense Fund is an example of this, it raises awareness of cost efficient, environmentally friendly procedures to interns taking an MBA. KKR and Ken Mehlman have taken the time to develop a package of analytical tools which have the ability to manage various resources. These tools allow management to assess their progress and identify any underlying issues. Today’s business community has been transformed forever by the environmentally centered work of these organizations. In conclusion, the work of these organizations has made green business techniques not only viable, but commercially desirable, and their novel ideas are setting a new standard in today’s community.
