Lady Gaga and Susan Boyle have helped the UK’s music download industry to fly by over fifty % in a year. After a five-year losing run, English music earnings are eventually rising and made £928.8 million last year. This was a 1.4 % increase on 2008, according to music industry body the BPI. Online downloads and mobile services rocketed 47.8 % to £188.9 million, accounting for nearly a 5th of the total. CD album sales continued to drop by 6.1 % though , notwithstanding major releases from comeback artists like Robbie Williams.The Lady Gaga Telephone video is one of the most controversial of all time.
Geoff Taylor, BPI Boss, said to the media : ”It’s inspiring to see industry cash stabilize and even show modest expansion in 2009. ”The CD continues to show bigger resilience than many foretold – it’s a fantastic digital product. The speed of expansion of new digital services is inspiring, but the dimensions of the market is still restricted by competition from illegal downloads.”.
