Poker Terminology: ‘Aces Up’ and ‘Filling Up’

The online poker term ‘aces up’ refers to when a player holds two pair, with aces being the highest of the two pair. The ‘up’ can also be applied to other kinds of two pair, such as ‘kings up’ or ‘fives up,’ where the number used is the bigger of the two pair. Q’s and 4’s then, would be queens up, on down the line. The value of the online poker hand plays the same way any other two pair would, and is really just an alternate way of announcing the value of your two pair. Aces up beats Kings up all day no matter what the second pair held is. Aces up with 6’s, as in the defining of two pair, beats Aces up with 5’s, and vice versa. The ‘up’ terminology is often used just to shorten the language, and two define the nature of a player’s two pair holding. A slight variation on the ‘up’ term comes in the phrase ‘fill up,’ which refers to the concept of ‘filling in’ on a drawing online pokerhand, such as hitting a fifth card of the same suit for a flush, etc. ‘Filling up’ more commonly also refers to someone turning their two pair or set into a full house, in which case they will say they have ‘filled up’ in accordance with becoming a ‘full house.’
